The eldest grandson of former U.S. President Harry Truman, who authorized the 1945 atomic bombings of Japan, welcomed President Barack Obama's visit last week to the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima as well as his speech that called for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Obama did "exactly what he should have done," 58-year-old Clifton Truman Daniel, who has joined calls to rid the world of nuclear arms, said Friday, noting that the speech the president delivered the same day touched on the suffering both sides went through during World War II and the need for "improving the world together."

The former journalist also said it was appropriate that Obama did not apologize for the A-bombings or raise Japan's responsibility for its wartime atrocities, apparently to avoid finger-pointing.
