The eldest grandson of former U.S. President Harry Truman, who ordered the 1945 atomic bombings of Japan, welcomed Wednesday the possibility of a visit by President Barack Obama to Hiroshima in May and expressed hope he will meet with survivors of the attacks.

"I hope President Obama does go to Hiroshima," Clifton Truman Daniel told Kyodo News in a phone interview, adding that a first visit by a sitting president to Hiroshima would be "wonderful."

The 58-year-old former journalist also said, "It would be great if Mr. Obama had time to hear some stories" from survivors, known as hibakusha in Japan.
