Police have sent papers on a suspected hit-and-run case involving actor Nagare Hagiwara to public prosecutors, investigative sources said Monday.

Hagiwara is suspected of hitting a man in his 50s from behind while driving his car in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, last Oct. 25 and subsequently fleeing the scene. The victim sustained an injury to his left arm that required two weeks of treatment, the police said.

Prosecutors were handed the case against the actor in late March, the police said.

The 61-year-old actor has denied involvement, according to his management agency. "I drove past the area in question but I cannot comment because I do not think I caused an accident or fled the scene," he was quoted as saying.

A surveillance camera near the scene showed Hagiwara's car, the police said, noting the vehicle had traces of an apparent accidental contact.

Hagiwara is well-known for his roles as villains in mystery dramas and for appearances on TV variety shows in cowboy attire.
