Seven more people were found dead Thursday after a heavy snowstorm hit northern and central parts of Japan from Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 10.

The dead included a 68-year-old man who fell from a garage roof while clearing snow Wednesday night in Niigata Prefecture and a 66-year-old woman who died after falling into a side ditch while removing snow Thursday morning in Semboku, Akita Prefecture.

Two of 25 Chinese crew members aboard a fishing boat are missing around the Oki Islands in Shimane Prefecture after the vessel hit a rock early Thursday morning while seeking shelter from the storm.

In Aichi Prefecture, one man died and more than 30 people were injured as more than 500 traffic accidents occurred due to heavy snow.

In Nagano Prefecture early Thursday morning, a train collided with a car stranded at a crossing, forcing around 85 people to stay on the train until after dawn. In Hokkaido, an empty train also hit a car stalled at a crossing. No injuries were reported in the two accidents.
