Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida has congratulated the winner of the presidential vote in Indonesia, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who was confirmed as the successful candidate in the race late Tuesday.
“We welcome that the presidential election was smoothly conducted and congratulate the election of the president,” Kishida said in a statement issued early Wednesday. “Indonesia is an important strategic partner (for Japan). We will build a solid cooperative relationship with the new government in order to further strengthen bilateral relations.”
Jakarta Gov. Jokowi was officially declared the winner of the July 9 vote amid challenges from his opponent, Prabowo Subianto, who condemned the election as fraudulent.
