Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture said Sunday that famed conductor Seiji Ozawa will become its director general Monday.

The post has remained vacant since Hidekazu Yoshida, a well-known music critic, died last May.

Ozawa, 77, has served as musical adviser to the Mito Chamber Orchestra since 1990, when it was established concurrently with the opening of the arts complex.

The maestro underwent surgery for esophagus cancer in 2010. After suspending all public activities to rest for 14 months, he resumed conducting Wednesday in Kyoto by leading the Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku in a performance of the 10-minute-long Egmont overture by Beethoven.
