Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday it plans to develop new vehicle platforms to share with different production regions so it can efficiently develop basic cars with high performance.

Vehicles developed on the new platforms will have a lower center of gravity and bolder styling, Toyota said.

The project will start with three front-wheel drive platforms, with models based on them accounting for about half of total production volume, Toyota said without disclosing any sales dates.

The nation's biggest automaker also said it will seek to reduce costs by increasing the sharing of core components across multiple models.
