Sanyo Electric Co. has removed its logo from the headquarters building in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, ahead of a groupwide reorganization next month by parent Panasonic Corp.
As part of the move, all the logos of the major appliance maker, acquired by its bigger rival after management troubles in 2009, will be replaced with Panasonic logos, company officials said.
The building for Sanyo's headquarters was completed in 1999, and the logo was installed that year. It was about 3 meters tall and 9 meters wide and installed on the exterior of the 10th floor.
Local residents watched as a crane slowly removed the nostalgic logo, letter by letter.
"I will miss it but both Sanyo and Panasonic are local (Osaka Prefecture) companies. I hope the group will be united and do its best," a local resident said.
Panasonic, based in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture, bought up all Sanyo and Sanyo and Panasonic Electric Works Co. shares in April, and plans to start using the Panasonic brand for their entire product range.
