Japanese baby formula exported to Hong Kong is safe to consume as government tests since March have found no contamination, the territory's food safety center said, looking to calm consumer fears after radioactive cesium was discovered in Meiji Co.'s product in Japan.

"Milk powder imported from Japan since March have all passed radiation inspections," Constance Chan, head of Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety, said Tuesday. "We will continue to monitor and find out if the batches of baby formula in question" have been imported.

Major retailers, including supermarket chains Park N Shop and Jusco, drug dispensary Watson's and cosmetic chain SaSa, said they had not imported any of the contaminated batches of baby powder.
