Honda Motor Corp. said Friday it is recalling some 304,000 vehicles sold mainly in North America and Japan as the driver-side air bags could rupture and may cause injury.

The measure covers Accord, Civic, Odyssey, Pilot, CR-V and other vehicles totaling 273,000 units in the United States, 27,000 in Canada, and roughly 2,000 units in Japan and another 2,000 in other countries.

Honda said an inappropriate gas-forming chemical in the air bag inflator could produce excessive pressure and cause the inflator casing to rupture.

The latest move is an expansion of recalls carried out in 2008, 2009 and 2010 due to the same problem, according to the automaker.
