Toyota Tsusho Corp. said Friday it will jointly start business with Kinki University to farm fully cultured juveniles of bluefin tuna and supply them to farmers.
Toyota Tsusho, the trading arm of Toyota Motor Corp., will use the knowhow of the university that succeeded in fully culturing juveniles in 2002, a world first at the time. It will supply the grown juveniles to tuna farmers.
The company will raise 6-cm juveniles provided by the university to up to 30 cm at a subsidiary in the city of Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture.
The company plans to ship the juveniles to domestic tuna farmers for the time being. It can farm about 10,000 juveniles under the initial capacity, according to the company.
Kinki University has decided on the cooperation to expand its tuna farming by using the firm’s larger facilities.
