The 10 regional power utilities expanded their power generation and purchases 7.4 percent from a year earlier to 80.20 million kwh in February for the third straight monthly rise, an industry body said in a preliminary report Friday.

Industrial power demand was brisk, with heating demand rising amid low temperatures, said the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan. But a federation official noted the February figure was still far lower than two years ago.

Power generation and purchases grew 7.0 percent at Tokyo Electric Power Co., 11.0 percent at Chubu Electric Power Co. and 5.7 percent at Kansai Electric Power Co.
