The Democratic Party of Japan-led government postponed a plan Friday to adopt a fresh stimulus package for the current fiscal year, which would likely boast at least ¥24 trillion in economic effects.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano said the Cabinet is unlikely to be able to finalize the stimulus measures until next week, probably Tuesday. It was initially expected to be completed Friday.

The postponement came after financial services minister Shizuka Kamei and his Kokumin Shinto (People's New Party), a junior partner in the ruling bloc, called for even bigger stimulus earlier Friday to shore up the sagging economy.
