WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The United States will consider moving a new military airfield in Okinawa Prefecture further offshore than currently planned, provided Tokyo proposes it, a senior Defense Department official said.

The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, also said the relationship of mutual trust between the two countries would suffer if the existing deal on the realignment of U.S. forces in Japan, which covers the airfield issue, is not implemented.
