SENDAI (Kyodo) The Sendai District Court sentenced a 65-year-old driver Friday to 28 months in prison for causing an accident that killed three people in the city in May.

Kenyu Ogawa struck an oncoming car May 5 after taking his eyes off the road, killing three of its occupants and seriously injuring his own daughter, who was riding with him, the ruling said.

"The defendant drove for 60 meters without looking ahead, resulting in serious consequences," Judge Shoji Miyata said. "The victims were suddenly deprived of their lives. This is not a case in which to give the defendant a suspended sentence."
