The government should expand the safety net for nonregular workers thrown out of work to help them land new jobs, according to an official white paper released Tuesday.

The report on health, labor and welfare says 3,400 nonregular workers have been made homeless due to the recession, mainly because they were evicted from company-owned housing.

The lack of housing has significantly hampered their efforts to find new jobs, making it difficult for them to stand on their own feet, says the white paper, which Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Yoichi Masuzoe submitted to the Cabinet.
