AU leader pushes for pledged aid

Arguing that African nations are honoring their pledge to democratize, African Union Commission Chairman Jean Ping urged developed countries Tuesday to hold up their end of the bargain and provide aid to the continent as promised.

“We have followed our promises of becoming democratic and law-governed states and respecting human rights, so we want developed nations to follow theirs, too,” Ping said in a speech in Tokyo organized by the Japan Institute of International Affairs.

Ping said he made the same plea at the Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido on Monday, where he attended a meeting of African and G8 leaders.

Ping also called for investments in agriculture, mining and basic infrastructure.
