With Internet users able to check out new words and phrases at the click of a mouse, it is becoming harder for publishers of print dictionaries to compete with Web-based alternatives.

Each November and December, bookstores display the new editions of Japan's contemporary word dictionaries. Once so popular most households were thought to have copies, the dictionaries have seen their sales steadily ebb in recent years.
