Three Chinese were killed and 13 Japanese were injured when a tour bus collided with a car in Xian, an official at the Japanese Embassy said Wednesday.

The head-on collision occurred in the capital of Shaanxi Province on Monday, and two Chinese in the car and a tour guide in the bus died, the official said.

Thirteen of the 21 Japanese tourists in the bus suffered minor injuries, including broken teeth, according to the official.

The bus was on its way from the airport to the city center.

The official quoted local police as saying that although they were still investigating the case, the collision appeared to have taken place when the car crossed into the opposite lane.

Many of the tourists canceled their trip and returned to Japan after being treated at a hospital, the official said.

Xian is a major tourist destination famous for a rare collection of life-size terra-cotta figures of warriors and horses.
