The Shin-Marunouchi Building opened its doors to the public Friday, giving the Marunouchi area in front of JR Tokyo Station a new 198-meter-high landmark to flock to in Chiyoda Ward.
About 2,000 people made a line around the 38-story skyscraper before it opened at around 11 a.m. Friday.
The building will house about 150 shops and restaurants on the first to seventh floors and several companies from the 10th to 37th floors.
The commercial skyscraper is part of a renewal project for the area devised by Mitsubishi Estate Co., which spent about 90 billion yen on the building and hopes to earn 22 billion yen annually. It expects about 20 million people to visit the building each year.
