Police and customs authorities in Osaka Prefecture have arrested a U.S. citizen who teaches English at Kansai Gaidai University on suspicion of hiding illegal drugs in his dorm room, investigative sources said Thursday.

Kyle Cooper, 41, is suspected of possessing GHB, or gamma-hydroxybutyrate, in his room inside the residence for foreign lecturers invited by the university in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, the sources said.

GHB, which can be lethal if mixed with alcohol, was banned in Japan in 2001. The drug used to be widely available over the Internet and adult entertainment stores.
