NAHA, Okinawa Pref. (Kyodo) The Okinawa District Court sentenced an American civilian employee of the U.S. military to nine years in prison Friday for raping two women in Okinawa during home intrusions.

Dag Thompson, a 36-year-old employee at the U.S. Kadena Air Base, was convicted of raping a woman in June 1998 in Naha and the other in August 2004 in Chatan, attacking the victims, both in their 20s, while they were sleeping at home.

Thompson remained silent during the trial. His counsel pleaded not guilty, questioning the validity of DNA tests on biological fluid found at the crime scenes and the victims' testimony.

In handing down the sentence, presiding Judge Nobuyuki Yokota cited the results of the DNA tests and the victims' testimony that Thompson matched the rapist's physical description.

Prosecutors had demanded 10 years.
