WASHINGTON (Kyodo) U.S. Senator Sam Brownback warned Japan on Tuesday that it will face economic sanctions if it continues its import ban on U.S. beef.

"The Japanese embargo on U.S. beef has gone on too long, and an amicable agreement must be reached soon or Congress will have no choice but to impose trade sanctions against Japan," the Kansas Republican said in a statement after meeting with Japanese Ambassador to the U.S. Ryozo Kato.

Brownback did not say whether he conveyed the warning to Kato, but said he "relayed how important this issue is to my constituents and the Kansas economy."
