Japan has banned imports of South African poultry in response to a notice that ostriches in the country have been diagnosed with avian influenza, the agriculture ministry said Monday.
The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said it received the notice from the Paris-based Organization for Animal Health.
Japan imported some 2,000 baby ostriches from South Africa annually over the past four to five years.
