The United Nations has selected architect Fumihiko Maki to design its new headquarters, U.N. officials said Wednesday.

The U.N. and the U.N. Development Corporation set up by the state and the city of New York chose Maki from among the three finalists.

The new 35-story building will be built within the U.N. compound in Manhattan to the south of the current headquarters, according to the officials.

They said construction may begin in the middle of next year at the earliest, but the schedule is still uncertain as they must discuss cost and safety details.
