The Net Kaden's first purpose is to secure safety and security, according to Yoshiaki Kushiki, executive director of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., which last year began marketing the system for controlling and monitoring homes with wireless technology.

Kushiki said everybody away from home worries whether crimes or fires will occur and whether their parents, children and pets are doing well, and these things can be confirmed by mobile phones through the "Net Kaden" system which translates as "network of home electrical appliances."

"Many people think it unexpectedly convenient to be able to quickly see on a TV screen linked to the Net information they want, such as weather forecasts, train schedules and road conditions," he said.

Regarding Net Kaden's future development, Kushiki said power consumption can be reduced by use of solar and fuel cells and through appropriate control by Net Kaden. "Sales of surplus power can also be possible."

He said wiring of houses will become unnecessary because wireless will be the chief technology. "In case of movies, wireless communication of 50 megabits a second will be used. For high-definition images, 22 megabits per second is required."

Kushiki said the protection of privacy needs to be treated carefully.
