A Japanese man suspected of murdering a man in Aichi Prefecture in May has been detained here, immigration officials said Monday.

Shinya Yonemura, 37, will be deported possibly next week to Japan to face charges that he stabbed to death Toshiro Ito, 32, on May 3, they said.

Yonemura was arrested Saturday while playing billiards with his Filipino girlfriend in the suburbs of the city of Valenzuela.

The girlfriend said Yonemura, who worked as a truck driver, arrived in Manila on May 8 and stayed with her in her house in Valenzuela. She said she originally met him about a year ago at a club in Nagoya.

Immigration officials said Yonemura violated Philippine immigration laws, including overstaying his entry permit. He was granted an initial stay of only 21 days and failed to get an extension.
