Police investigating the murder of a 27-year-old man in Wakayama last month arrested the man's father early Saturday on suspicion of stabbing his son to death.

The police allege that the suspect, Kishiro Kawade, 64, stabbed his son Takao with a fruit knife at a parking lot near their home and left him to die. Kawade has denied being involved in his son's death.

According to investigators, Kawade told a neighbor to notify the police that he had found his son lying in the car park after he went out to buy cigarettes.

Before his arrest, Kawade told Kyodo News that he was not involved in his son's death and urged the authorities to catch the killer as soon as possible. "No one except a parent can comprehend this kind of grief," he said.

The police said they have no motive for the killing.
