The wife of a mobster in Miyagi Prefecture has told police that their 2-year-old daughter, who is listed as missing, died last June, investigative sources said Tuesday.

Benilda Suzuki, 28, of Philippine origin, and her 44-year-old husband, Yukio, of Hasama, Miyagi Prefecture, were arrested April 24 on suspicion of neglecting their daughter, Samia, police said.

According to the sources, Suzuki told investigators she found her daughter dead on a futon on the second floor of their house June 1, and told her husband about it.

The man ordered his wife to go to work, and when she returned home, the daughter's body was not there, according to the sources.

A diary kept by the woman indicated the girl died around June 1, the sources said, without elaborating.

The mother used to drop the girl off at a local day-care center up until around October 1999, police said.

Acting on information provided by staff at the nursery, police arrested the couple on suspicion of not properly feeding their daughter, the sources said.
