Singapore Airlines said Wednesday it will increase its flights to Tokyo from 17 per week to 20 beginning in mid-April next year in anticipation of greater demand.

The decision seems to fly in the face of the Singapore Tourism Board's announcement that visitor arrivals from Japan to Singapore plunged 51 percent in October.

But the airline said it will likely suspend some flights to other Japanese cities.

Flights between Singapore and Osaka, for example, will be cut from 17 times a week to 15 beginning Jan. 13.

Flights to Fukuoka and Hiroshima will be also halved from four times a week, while flights to Nagoya will drop from seven to six.

However, Singapore Air said it expects to resume its normal flight traffic to Nagoya and Osaka next May.
