Chiba Gov. Akiko Domoto on Wednesday officially canceled a plan to reclaim the Sanbanze wetlands of Tokyo Bay, saying she will instead work on restoring the tidal flats drawing on advice from citizens and others.

Domoto told a regular session of the prefectural assembly that the plan to reclaim 101 hectares of tidal flats in the interior of Tokyo Bay off the cities of Ichikawa and Funabashi had been scrapped.

The prefecture will solicit the participation of citizens and nongovernmental organizations when establishing a committee in the near future to come up with measures to reverse the environmental damage to the bay's ailing shoals and wetlands, she said.

"Now we are going to get to work on putting together a specific plan," Domoto said.
