Poland's Foreign Investment Agency said Thursday that it will construct an industrial complex for Japanese firms in Zarow, southern Poland, in a tieup with Japanese trading giant Mitsui & Co.

The industrial complex, the first to be built in Poland for firms of a specific country, will be built on some 68 hectares of land, which will be designated as a special economic zone offering tax breaks, the agency said.

Mitsui, working together with Polish authorities, will support Japanese firms that want to launch operations in the country by helping with legal work, such as applying for government approval.

According to the Foreign Investment Agency, five or six Japanese companies are already considering investing in Poland, with one of them planning to begin factory operations in 2003.

On Tuesday, Toyota Motor Corp. and PSA Peugeot Citroen of France presented the Polish economy minister with candidate sites for a joint venture to produce small cars. Toyota officials said they will announce the decision on the location of the new plant at the end of the year.
