The Philippine Congress formally approved Wednesday the appointment of Domingo Siazon, a former Philippine foreign secretary, as ambassador to Japan.

The congressional commission rushed deliberations on Siazon’s appointment to enable him to assume his post in Tokyo in time to prepare for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s visit to Japan, scheduled for Sept. 12 through Sept. 15.
