For Kim Soon Deok, 79, of South Korea, painting a picture is the only time she can forget her past.

“Painting itself isn’t difficult, but what is most painful for me is the time when I’m trying to work out an idea about what to paint. When I think about my past, I can’t get to sleep for days,” the slight woman said with downcast eyes.
