Three earthquakes measuring magnitudes between 5.0 and 5.6 hit Akuseki Island and nearby islands in Kagoshima Prefecture on Monday afternoon, the Meteorological Agency reported.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 4:29 p.m., 4:44 p.m. and 5:04 p.m. quakes. The agency said there were no fears of tsunami.

The agency said the second quake registered an upper 5 on the Japanese intensity scale of 7. The first and third quakes each registered as lower 5.
