A man was instantly killed Friday morning when he threw himself onto the tracks of an oncoming JR commuter train on the Joban Line at Kameari Station in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward, police said.

The incident stalled the 10-car train at the station for about 50 minutes from 7:40 a.m., forcing the cancellation of 20 train runs and affecting some 142,000 passengers, according to JR officials.

Kameari police are trying to identify the man.

In another area of town Friday, a woman was killed after she jumped in front of an oncoming Mita Line subway train at Kasuga Station in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward shortly before 11 a.m., police said, adding that investigators believe the woman committed suicide.

The incident caused the suspension of Mita Line services between Hibiya and Sugamo for about one hour, affecting 15,000 passengers, subway officials said.
