Japan and the United States will hold working-level meetings Thursday and Friday in Tokyo to check progress on a 1995 bilateral accord on financial services, according to Japanese officials.Officials from the Finance Ministry and the U.S. Treasury Department will discuss a variety of issues concerning financial regulations in each country, a ministry official said.Both governments have carried out most of the deregulation measures under an existing bilateral framework for economic issues, the official said. The framework covers areas such as fund management, securities, banking and cross-border capital transactions.Officials also will discuss the Year 2000 computer problem. Other possible topics include recent developments, such as Japan's bills on financial stabilization and the U.S. bailout of Long-Term Capital Management LP, an aggressive investment fund, the official said.Sei Nakai, deputy chief of the ministry's international bureau, and Caroline Atkinson, deputy assistant secretary for international monetary and financial policy at the U.S. Treasury Department, will lead the talks.
