Method for killing dolphins is inhumane
We were interested to see the article 'Taiji's dolphin hunters have a new voice' (Media Mix, Oct. 23) exploring some of the social issues and controversy surrounding the hunting of dolphins in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture. Nevertheless, we are concerned that while the article explores the social issues...

Police failed victim of school bullying
Regarding "Police warned school about extortion of bullied Fukushima boy in 2011" in the Nov. 19 edition, students stole ¥1.5 million from a fellow student through bullying and the police simply turned the case over to the school to rectify.

Hayakawa blazed trail for Mifune
Regarding the story "Mifune: The making of Japan's 'Last Samurai' " in the Nov. 19 edition, how soon they forget. Or is it that they simply don't know? I met Toshiro Mifune for the first time when he appeared at the old Toho Theater in Times Square (New York) back in the early 1960s when Japanese films...

Let's discuss what Trump means for Asia
The billionaire businessman represents uncharted waters, a situation that could undermine the Japan-U.S. alliance and upend regional security in Asia.

A message of sharing for the world's leaders
A thatched-roof farmhouse together with the deep red-orange color of a ripe persimmon tree is an archetypal scene of late autumn in Japan. Such a view makes our country so beautiful and has a unique power of healing with a nostalgic feeling.

Trump may leave Japan defenseless
The American voters have spoken. Professionalism, dignity and respect are no longer valued. Instead of electing a president who stands as a moral leader, Americans elected an unqualified, childish man who uses nicknames and lies to attack those who oppose him. As an American female, I am scared. As a...

President Trump is a risk worth taking
Electing Donald Trump might have been a gamble. He could potentially be one of the most controversial presidents in the history of the United States, but there have been presidents in the past, most notably Bill Clinton, who have been equally questionable. With the influence of the media I don't think...

For Trump, the opposite of a Greek tragedy
Finally, the curtain has drawn on Donald Trump's vaudevillian presidential run and, after nearly 600 days, the lights went down with a shocking twist: victory. While his detractors' immediate shock will likely prevent them from having 20/20 hindsight, the Trump troupe's success shows that any should've-could've-would've-punch...

Marines have no place in Okinawa
Is it existential denial or simple rejection of marines that is at issue in Okinawa?

Reduce bluefin tuna catch now
Overfishing is a serious problem around the world. All major countries are responsible for the current state of fish decline, but Japan is the leader in consumption of many fish taken.

Apologize, but in the right way
I was very much interested in "Anthem refuseniks, and ancient legends" by Hiroaki Sato in the Oct. 23 edition. And I quite agreed with him.

Election day and night: from ballot boxes to celebrations and shock waves
A long and often tumultuous campaign came to a climax that many media polls did not predict: a victory for Donald Trump, the controversial presidential candidate for the Republican party, who managed to pull ahead and maintain his lead over the Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Promises to end 'karoshi' ring hollow
I was saddened to read of the suicide of Matsuri Takahashi, driven to depression by the culture of overwork, bullying and harassment at the Dentsu Inc. advertising agency. That a young, intelligent woman should be made so miserable that she would take her own life is truly a tragedy.

What's to be done about the TPP?
Frankly it is time for a backup plan. Even if Hillary Clinton is elected president of the United States, as appears likely, she is not going to move on this for a year or two and it is extremely difficult to predict what she will try to change in order to meet her election promises and what that might...

Trump's run really a grab for profit
As the campaigning for the next American president reaches its climax, it resembles more a soap opera than a serious political occasion to elect the most powerful individual on the planet.

Safety in one-sidedness or in balance?
If we can see past the United States presidential campaign's diversionary mudslinging and charisma (or lack thereof) we realize we all just want to be safe, and that starts with strength in our leadership.

Not many Americans support Trump
I would like to remind the fine citizens all over Japan that Donald Trump does not represent the views and feelings of many Americans. I, for one, am embarrassed by him and hold onto hope that he is defeated next week in his bid to become the next president of the United States of America.

Longform

After the asset-price bubble crash of the early 1990s, employment at a Japanese company was no longer necessarily for life. As a result, a new generation is less willing to endure a toxic work culture —life’s too short, after all.
How Japan's youth are slowly changing the country's work ethic
