The amazing thing about a modern Spider-Man
Too often, superheroes are clueless about what women want. Sure, they can catch the villains and save the world, but when it comes to relationships, they stink.

Double-take for a new one-woman 'Tinkerbell'
Life is hard for Marcello Magni. Not only is he directing a production separately starring famed actress Tomoko Mariya and upcoming talent Kae Okumura, but the work, in Japanese, is also his brand-new version of an early play by his great friend — and Japan's leading contemporary dramatist — Hideki Noda.

Kushida's 'Flapper' comes roaring back
"Young people these days won't be too familiar with the term the Roaring Twenties, but the 1920s still hold interest as a period. It was a time of changing values, not only in the United States, but in Europe: Dadaism, Cubism, Expressionism and other non-mainstream arts were blossoming. All over the world, people were looking to find new things."

'Prelude Exhibition — William Kentridge: The Refusal of Time'
"The Refusal of Time" is a collaborative work between South-African artist William Kentridge and science historian Peter Galison. A five-channel video installation with a complex sound system, this large-scale installation presents Kentridge's innovative animation and a large "breathing machine" sculpture called an "elephant." The piece explores themes of science, globalization, colonialism and memory, outlining the history of our changing comprehension of time. The 'refusal' of the title is both a personal and political statement.

Charles E. McJilton: 'Stop attempting to control nature already'
What confuses you about Japan? When Japan says it loves nature but then cements rivers and prunes back trees so they resemble poodles on a stick.

Money, censorship and the future of Asian cinema
Flitting around Roppongi Hills during the week of the Tokyo International Film Festival, you get to meet and chat with any number of interesting people, but one of the better conversations I had was sitting down for coffee with Jacob Wong, curator of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, held each year in late March and early April.

'The Suit' squares a love triangle
In his seminal 1968 work "The Empty Space," Peter Brook wrote: "Certainly, we still wish to capture in our arts the invisible currents that rule our lives, but our vision is now locked to the dark end of the spectrum. Today the theatre of doubting, of unease, of trouble, of alarm, seems truer than the theatre with a noble aim."

Fox tackles history in 'Emperor'
Actor Matthew Fox saw his career take off in the 1990s with the role of Charlie Salinger in the American TV series "Party of Five," and he gained even more popularity as Jack Shephard, the central character in the innovative series "Lost." Now, though, his performance in the movie, "Emperor," in which he plays the role of U.S. intelligence officer Gen. Bonner Fellers, who investigates the wartime guilt of Emperor Hirohito (posthumously known as Emperor Showa) is surely his biggest movie role to date, coming as it does after 2008's "Vantage Point."

There's a royal problem in portraying the ruler
Akira Kurosawa once told me that if he were to make a film about the Emperor, "I would probably be killed. ... Even if the film were highly positive, just the fact that I was using the Emperor as a character would be enough to make (the rightists) mad."
