The must-see list is long at Short Shorts film fest
When it comes to getting a movie fix these days, more people opt for their computer screens than venturing outside to a theater. Hollywood has countered this trend with a slew of 3-D blockbusters and cinematic largesse, but how does the short film fare?

Director Yukinori Makabe has high hopes for his 'Tokyo Sky Story' at film festival
A staffer of the Robot production house, where he has worked as an assistant director on entries in the hit "Always" and "Odoru Daisosasen (Bayside Shakedown)" series, 29-year-old Yukinori Makabe has also directed award-winning short films, including "The Sun and the Moon," which beat out 250 others to win the Grand Prix of the Journey Award 2012 short-film contest sponsored by Louis Vuitton. His latest film, "Tokyo Sky Story," will be shown at the Space 634 theater at Tokyo Skytreetown to celebrate the first anniversary of Tokyo Skytree, and as a special screening of Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia. At the Robot headquarters in Ebisu, a very young-looking, but poised and articulate Makabe explained how the film came to be made.

Bringing the love of short films to a local audience
If there was a birthday cake for the Brillia Short Shorts Theater, it would probably be an elegant, minimalist affair — no excessive decorations, nothing too calorific and five slim candles giving off a modest orange glow. One of just four movie theaters in and around Tokyo dedicated to short films, Brillia Short Shorts turns 5 years old this month. And the good news is: People really seem to like it. Not in a spectacular, queuing around the block kind of way, but just enough to fill the 128 lipstick-red upholstered seats, each embroidered with its own gold number, and have the lobby cafe (a secret find for foodies) thronged by discerning fans who see no reason not to have an artisanal latte just because they're at the movies.
