Difference: Small but intense challenges served on big plates
Certain foods are like certain songs: they transport you to another time and place. Foie gras always reminds me of Belgium — specifically a wedding I once attended outside Brussels. It was the bride's wish (and command) that all 200-plus guests would eat foie gras, and from that time I've always associated this (sometimes controversial) food with Belgium. But perhaps no more.

Pirate ships, cruises, riverbanks and urban campsites: New twists on the beer-garden formula in Tokyo
One way to look at the arrival of summer in Japan is to focus on the bad side of the season, such as the sticky humidity, the need to have the air-conditioner blasting cold air for the next three months. All power to you, but consider how no other time of the year can you enjoy drinking and eating outdoors like you can during a Japanese summer — especially in Tokyo, where vacant lots and rooftops are transformed into bars and restaurants. It beats being huddled under the kotatsu (heated table) sadly poking at a mandarin orange.

Stretch your fright nights right into the weekend
This year, many people in Japan celebrated Halloween early. Last weekend saw parades, parties and trick-or-treating at special events across the country, but for those who grew up in places that historically celebrate the holiday, Oct. 25 may have been a bit too soon to get spooked.

Misotetsu Kagiroi: Meat, miso and veg, from hot plate to platter
Hidden away on a narrow backstreet in Ogawamachi, one of Tokyo's old-school carousing districts, Misotetsu Kagiroi is far from your typical izakaya tavern. Unlike most of its neighbors, it does not sport a large red lantern outside to grab your attention. Nor are you greeted by raucous revelry as you push through the doorway.

Timing is everything at Tokyo Skytree. In daylight the urban sprawl below just looks banal; at night, the city lights gleam with romance, but you can't see to the far horizons. Get there for sunset, though, and if conditions are right, the view can be little short of magical.
