As Geki×Cine raises its game, Amami goes into battle for her man
Geki×Cine isn't really film and it isn't theater, but rather an intriguing blend of the two. With geki meaning "stage," and "cine" representing film, the finished productions are shown on the big screen. So are they stage-to-screen adaptations? Most certainly not. More accurately, they are stage plays or musicals on film, shot with cameras coming in so close to the performers you can see the sweat running off their cheeks.

Media caught up in festive PR atmosphere of new Hokuriku bullet train
A friend who often goes to Ishikawa Prefecture for family reasons mentioned on Facebook last week that he took the overnight bus from Tokyo and arrived at Kanazawa Station at about the same time of the Hokuriku Shinkansen's inaugural run. When I asked why he hadn't taken the new train, he said it was impossible to get tickets, which is understandable considering so many people wanted to be on the first one. However, he also thinks the fare is too high and resents JR West and JR East, which jointly operate the line, for not offering the same kinds of discounts that other shinkansen offer for round trips and regular patrons.

Japan's fertile architectural evolution
Today, Japanese contemporary architecture enjoys an outstanding international reputation, but the story of its emergence to a position of such accomplishment and acclaim has not yet been told comprehensively. A pair of exhibitions at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa presents a postwar history of Japanese architecture — "Japan Architects 1945-2010" — and the tendencies that are gathering momentum now and will shape the future — "Architecture since 3.11."

Building social change after the earthquake
In 2011, the devastation of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami forced Japanese architects to rethink their understanding of architecture at a fundamental level — to consider closely society's systems and the affect buildings had on not only the life of, but also the psyche of the people.

Kanazawa City: the architecture of tea
One of the first things you see as you exit Kanazawa Station is a giant brass sculpture of a teapot sunken drunkenly into a mound of grass or, depending on your interpretation, tilting to fill a cup of the refreshing green brew the city is noted for. That a municipal piece of art should be dedicated to tea culture (made by artist Kazumasa Saegusa) says something about the drink's place in the history and contemporary life of Kanazawa, the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture.

'Leandro Erlich: The Ordinary?'
"The Swimming Pool" by Leandro Erlich is not one you can dive into. From above it appears as a regular deep pool of shimmering water, but it is actually only 10 cm deep. Suspended over a glass sheet, the "The Swimming Pool" can also be viewed from below. Such playfulness in interpretation turns an ordinary, everyday object into something extraordinary — a feature of Erlich's works that often toy with human perception.
