Lower sales affected acts worldwide
The Japanese music market has faced hard times as of late. Starting with an announcement from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry in March that the country's music sales dropped 16.7 percent in 2013, the past 12 months saw no particular upswing in physical or digital sales, therefore trying to draw a consensus of what's actually popular here can be a challenge. The Oricon Charts, which only count physical sales, and various download rankings looked like totally different worlds at the end of 2014.

'Frozen' sweets taste better cold, of course
Even if you're sick of seeing and hearing about Disney's mega-hit movie "Frozen" everywhere you go, it's hard not to be a fan of these marshmallows produced by Eiwa (¥130) that come in a package with Elsa, Anna and Olaf on the front. Each marshmallow is filled with a tangy yogurt sauce that leaves a slightly sour aftertaste. For a light summer snack, try popping them in the refrigerator or freezer (guess which Elsa would prefer) for a couple of hours to chill the yogurt center. These limited-edition treats will only be around until December, when you'll be forced to "Let it Go."

Japan won't let 'Frozen' go
At first blush, the Japanese success of the animated film "Frozen" seems easy to explain. In a country where people pack Tokyo Disneyland on weekdays, of course a new princess-centric cartoon from Disney would succeed, but "Frozen" has been a phenomenon all its own. It's on pace to be the second-highest-grossing film in Japanese history, and has become an inescapable presence in pop culture this year.
