The truth is still out there
"The truth is out there." This tagline to the sci-fi TV series "The X-Files" used to give me chills when it was first aired on Fox in 1993. The series touted an intriguing minimalist elegance — from its set designs to FBI agent Dana Scully's pristine white shirts and smart suits, contrasted with the slightly rumpled look of her partner Fox Mulder. It was an unusual aesthetic for the horror-heavy content derived from the two agents chasing serial murderers, government conspiracies and Little Green Men.

'Asia's Next Top Model' just as catty as America's
Reality TV staple "America's Next Top Model" recently hung up its Jimmy Choos after a stupefying 22 seasons, but its spin-off, Singapore-based "Asia's Next Top Model," is now in its fourth "cycle," airing locally on Fox Channel and Hulu.jp. Fourteen tall, slender beauties from across Asia compete to win a photo spread, representation by a modeling agency and other fame and fortune. While contestants come from as far afield as Myanmar and Mongolia, local viewers may be surprised to see no Japanese in the mix; the show's English-fluency requirement is clearly a barrier, and it's no coincidence that previous Japanese entrants were all hāfu (half-Japanese).

Or, they'll assume I already know him — what with his being black, working in the media and living in Japan for, like, forever and all.
