Sarabeth's PBJ French Toast is a twist on the classic brown-paper-bag lunch
More and more non-Japanese foods that were once impossible to find in Tokyo have become available in recent years. The quality can be hit or miss, but it is out there, waiting to be devoured. But what do you do when you get a craving for a comfort food that doesn't fit on a trendy menu, say for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? You wait until your hopes and dreams are answered.

Handels Vagen's frozen treats will have you singing Handel's 'Messiah'
Premium ice cream is never out of season. But the timing could hardly have been better for the arrival of Handels Vagen at the start of this summer. Located in the basement of the new Tokyu Plaza in Ginza, it boasts a modest footprint that seems appropriate to the artisan production scale of very superior gelatos and sorbets.

Classic summer treat gets a granola makeover from Kellogg's
Wa Kitchen Kanna (2-43-11 Shimouma, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo) gives its tastiest offering, kakigōri (shaved ice), a breakfast-ready makeover in cooperation with cereal maker Kellogg's. The limited-edition dessert takes the store's original kakigori, adds a hearty amount of condensed milk to the top and surrounds it with granola. This ¥1,000 treat tries to replicate the feel of breakfast cereal — and comes close when everything starts melting together, making for a cool, fruit-accented taste. For a little extra, double up on sauces and fruit, but the basic form is just as refreshing.

Tokyo serves up some frozen delights
Ice cream and gelato has been the go-to for cooling refreshments for centuries, evolving from the Romans eating fruit-juice flavored snow to the vanilla, chocolate chip and other popular dairy-rich products we see today. But who says we have to stick to the regular flavors? This summer, several limited-edition frozen desserts have been released just in time for Japan's soaring temperatures.

Pocky goes for the gold with Brazilian Orange-flavored snacks
Let the race for clever marketing tie-ins with the 2016 Rio Olympics begin! Pocky's newest limited-edition variety, celebrates one of Brazil's biggest crops by merging citrus flavor and chocolate. Brazilian Orange (¥162) initially tastes a bit off-putting, the chocolate coating on the outside relies too much on the central fruit and ends up tasting like chewing gum. But, whether it's down to some sneaky chemistry or learned appreciation, the more you eat the less off-putting each Pocky stick gets, with the pleasant hints of orange eventually replacing other artificial flavors.

Patisserie Ravi,e Relier: Let them eat cake
A short walk from Osaka Station, on the edge of Ogimachi Park, is a petite cake shop called Patisserie Ravi,e Relier, which opened in 2009 and follows the royal maxim "let them eat cake" with an update: "Let them eat cake and drink water." This patisserie serves only cakes and water, but what a sweet line-up it is: these could be the supermodels of the cake world, except loaded with calories. After much deliberation — after all, half the fun (and frustration) is in the choosing — we went with a Pierre Temptacions, an avocado-like concoction, both in shape and color, and a Tolee Chocolat, an intense and dense slice of chocolate cake.

Little Pie Factory draws big crowds
The newly opened Little Pie Factory in Tokyo's Hiroo neighborhood (5-16-6 Minami-Azabu, Minato Ward) serves up tiny pies in all kinds of flavors from classic apple (¥380) to a savory turkey and mushroom (¥450). The turkey and mushroom variety is only available during the month of November. While the shop may have an efficient assembly line that makes sure that enough hot pies are stocked, it’s just not enough to keep up with the demand. If you go too late in the afternoon expect to join a long line up and find many of the flavors already sold out. For more information, call 03-5791-3075 or visit the shop's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/littlepiefactory.

EO: Top Kansai chef presents French cuisine with a twist
What makes a good restaurant? It's a pretty basic question, and one that I imagine is on most people's minds, even if you aren't actively aware of it. With a new restaurant, such as EO, this question and the search for answers are more to the forefront. What it boils down to, if you'll forgive the cooking metaphor, is an enjoyable experience, comforting food and even a little inspiration.

Magnolia Bakery opens early for weekend breakfast muffins
Magnolia Bakery, which opened in Omotesando in June, will now open an hour earlier on weekends (10 a.m.) to serve freshly baked, moist muffins. The selection will include two or three out of six flavors, such as raisin bran (pictured), banana, and poppy-seed with lemon glaze (¥280 each), all baked to the same recipes used at Magnolia's New York branches. Be prepared to wake up early: The store attracts a long line on weekends, and once the muffins are gone, they're gone. Why you should never judge a cupcake by its frosting
While the heavy dollop of bright frosting hints at an overwhelmingly sugary dessert reminiscent of those back in the United States, Ciappuccino New York's cupcakes are not too sweet. Flavors include Cookie Cream — which is topped with a mini Oreo-like cookie — Berry Go Round and S'More (¥324 each). The cupcakes can be found at Ciappuccino branches all over the Kanto area and in Dean & DeLuca shops, but if you're feeling lazy you can order them in bulk and have them delivered to your home. The shop also sells Whoopie Pies, a New England treat of cream sandwiched between two cookie-shaped pieces of cake. www.ciapshop.jp.
