Horror of 'Child 44' is bogged down by Soviet era bureaucracy
The recurring line in "Child 44" is, "there is no murder in paradise." It's a reflection of the political image projected in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era — these were a paradisal states, free from Western ills like poverty and crime, and there was nothing more to say about it. But the backdrop of "Child 44" is Moscow in 1952, and it feels more like a hellhole of oppression than paradise.

Daniel Radcliffe gets devilish in 'Horns'
There are few actors who can enjoy the kind of success that Daniel Radcliffe has enjoyed at his age. At 10, he became the face of the multibillion-dollar "Harry Potter" franchise, which became a cultural phenomenon. As the series drew to a close in 2011, the young British actor was faced with two dilemmas: shaking off the typecasting of his initial success and making the jump from child to adult actor — all without magic.

Acting brings magic to otherwise flat script
"Horns" is a stewing, blood-infused cauldron of atmospheric horror — and you can expect no less from director Alexandre Aja whose track record so far is frightening ("Piranha 3D," "High Tension"). With "Horns," however, Aja has ventured into adaptation territory (up till now, he had mostly worked on remakes) with Joe Hill's bestselling novel of the same name (Hill is the pen name of Stephen King's son Joseph). Aja has also brought in A-lister Daniel Radcliffe, who must be intent on shedding his Harry Potter image by taking on any role that doesn't involve wands or quidditch.

There's no exaggerating the role of two parents
Dismayed by inequality and the intergenerational transmission of poverty, the U.S. must face the truth that economic success depends less on whether your father was rich or poor than on whether you knew your father at all.

Short Term 12: 'an intense intimacy with the camera'
Director Destin Daniel Cretton's first job out of college was working at a halfway home for troubled teens and, rather like author Ken Kesey's stint working at a mental institution, he clearly gained some insight and a fistful of vivid characters from the experience. The resulting film, "Short Term 12," is unlike other "institutionalized" dramas such as "Girl, Interrupted" or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in that it has a lot of sympathy for the young social workers who are doing their best to help the kids in their care — learning to deal with freak-outs, cultivating a sense of humor under fire and finding creative ways to connect with traumatized, defensive kids.

Greetings From Tim Buckley: 'The burden of celebrity-parent expectations'
The problems with "Greetings From Tim Buckley" begin with the title. The film isn't really about 1960-70s singer-songwriter Tim Buckley — who died from an overdose in 1975 — so much as his son, Jeff, who produced a single hit album in 1994, "Grace," before drowning in the Mississippi River a few years later.
