Chocolat Bel Amer: Head-turning desserts in an old wooden town house
First established in Tokyo, Chocolat Bel Amer has now opened a boutique in a gorgeous traditional machiya (town house) fronted by a Japanese maple tree. In a rather bold move, it is directly opposite Inoda, an institution among Kyoto's cafes. What connects both these places — besides the street — is an extreme earnestness.

Biople by CosmeKitchen (biople.jp) has locations in Ogikubo, Odawara and Machida, and is known for a line of organic cosmetics. In addition to selling beauty products, the company also imports a growing selection of organic food, including tasty freeze-dried fruit covered in chocolate from Landgarten (¥490, excluding tax), which were released last month.

New Dars chocolate packs an acai punch
Japan's recent acai berry craze has led to the creation of smoothies, yogurts and juices that can be bought in convenience stores across the country. The latest to join the pack is this limited-edition acai-flavored Dars chocolate from Morinaga (¥163), which has a crunchy cereal center and bits of acai, pomegranate, blueberry and banana mixed in. Morinaga uses acai from Fruta Fruta (www.frutafruta.com), a vendor that imports the berry from Brazil and sells all the fixings you need if you ever want to make a real acai bowl yourself.

Bourbon's sakura-flavored Mochi Chocolat an early bloomer
It's cold and the trees are still bare, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the cherry blossoms before they bloom. Bourbon is one of the first confectioners to join the wave of cherry-blossom-flavored goodies with the release of these bite-sized bits of white chocolate wrapped in soft sakura-flavored mochi, part of its Mochi Chocolat lineup. Bite into the treat and you'll find red- bean sauce. Unfortunately, like Japan's beloved flower, these sakura chocolates are only available for a limited time, so don't expect to see them on the shelves for very long!
