.5 Kawakami deactivated
NAGOYA (Kyodo) Kenshin Kawakami, the 2003 Opening Day pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons, was removed Wednesday from the active roster of the Central League club after complaining of pain in his right shoulder, baseball officials said.
The right-hander felt discomfort after working five-plus innings in Tuesday’s game against the Yakult Swallows at Alpen stadium in Toyama. He injured the same area in 2000 and was limited to just two wins in 14 games that year.
Fighters Nishiura rib broken
Nippon Ham Fighters outfielder Katsuhiro Nishiura on Wednesday was diagnosed with a broken rib and will require three weeks to fully recover from the injury, officials of the Pacific League club said.
OSAKA (Kyodo) Hanshin Tigers right-hander Taiyo Fujita was diagnosed with damaged ligaments in the elbow of his throwing arm and will be sidelined for the first half of the season, officials of the Central League club said Wednesday.
Fujita was removed from the active roster Friday, the day after he was knocked out in 2/3 of an inning against the Chunichi Dragons at Nagoya Dome, and was told by doctors it would take about two months until the pain in his inner arm disappears.
The third-year rotation pitcher and 2001 top draft pick is 1-2 in five starts so far this season with an ERA of 3.09.
