Europe poised to take chance on reducing farm subsidies

I f If there is one topic that has been catching a lot of attention lately, it is the global rise in prices for resources, especially the most precious resource of all: food.

'Civilized' talk contends with politics, culture

PARIS — What does it mean to be "civilized"? Obviously, being highly educated, wearing a tie, eating with a fork or cutting one's nails weekly is not enough.

Why not show kanji expressions?

Thank you for Roger Pulvers' two-part series on mastering kanji (May 20 and May 27). It is a formidable work. Truly fantastic. However, it could have been even more fantastic if each of the articles had illustrated the romaji cited by Pulvers with the actual kanji.

Steps to encourage immigration

Recent news tells us that the Japanese government is finally waking up to the fact that we need more immigrants. Great. But how about encouraging more people to come to Japan by establishing laws that explicitly make discrimination on the basis of race and nationality a crime.

MLB's greatest finishes, memorable moments chronicled in new book

I received a new book this week titled "Walkoffs, Last Licks and Final Outs," written by Bill Chuck and Jim Kaplan. The sub-title is "Baseball's Grand (and not-so-grand) Finales," and the foreword is by Jon Miller, the popular play-by-play broadcaster who does "Sunday Night Baseball" with Joe Morgan...

Criticism spun out of control

Juliette Mitsutsune of Honolulu is condescending and off the mark in her May 15 letter, "Rewards of Physical Affection," where she gives an analysis of the state of child-rearing in Japan. In instances of seeing crying children, she talks of feeling compelled to admonish mothers who appear to give their...

Qualified welcome after 10 years

Regarding the Views From the Street question posed on May 27, "Is it easy for foreigners to integrate into Japanese society?": I think the question should have been, "Are foreigners easily welcomed here?"

Reality of life without a god

I am saddened but not surprised by the backlash that Peter Singer's May 19 article, "If there is a god, then why is there suffering?," has received. At a loss for a logical argument against his proposal, many have resigned to attacking Singer's character or making completely irrelevant claims.

Arata Isozaki: Astonishing by design

If the entire Japanese architectural fraternity was one big royal family, then Arata Isozaki would be a king approaching the end of a long and glorious reign.

Major donor in time of distress

Two articles on May 30, "Japanese medical team heads off to Myanmar" and "Japan pledges $50 million for food (to Africa)," gave me mixed feelings. One thing is clear: On humanitarian grounds, Japan scores high as a friendly country to friends, foes and the needy -- all who let out a distress call. In...

Responsibility toward Africa

African leaders and their partners ended their three-day Yokohama meeting on African development not only on an optimistic note, underscored by the rather rapid recent economic growth in Africa, but also with awareness of problems the continent faces. These problems include infrastructure, population...

Generic drugs? Brand-name drugs? Any old drugs will do

On April 1, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare notified local governments that from now on welfare recipients entitled to free medical care must only use generic pharmaceuticals rather than more expensive brand-name drugs. Almost immediately the plan was attacked in the media, which implied that...

'Family' is no cause to feel sorry

Is aging Japan really ready for all the non-Japanese carers it needs?

One of the cliches most bandied about in the Japanese business world is yareba dekiru. An English equivalent might be the title of Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff's great 1972 hit, "You Can Get It If You Really Want."
