The Japanese government is preparing for likely U.S. demands that Japan cover a greater share of the costs for stationing U.S. forces in the country, after President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Tokyo's current level of burden-sharing.

With the existing special agreement that stipulates Japan's host-nation financial support expiring in March 2027, bilateral negotiations on renewal are expected to go into full swing around autumn next year.

Japan hopes to avoid a significant increase in spending due to severe fiscal constraints, but is expected to face difficulties in the forthcoming talks.
